Why go out with a photographer

You can find the locations yourself. Getting the picture is the other half.

I am not a guide who happens to own a camera. I spent more than twenty five years making pictures for magazines and advertising, and the last twelve of them living in Phnom Penh.

That means two things on a tour. The route is built around light and moments rather than around landmarks, so we are at the right place at the right hour instead of at noon with everyone else. And when we get there I know the people: the barber, the market vendors, the monks at the pagoda. They are glad to see us, and that is the difference between a photograph of someone and a photograph with someone.

No lectures, no classroom. We walk, we look, we shoot, and I tell you what I would do differently while there is still time to do it.

What really made this tour stand out is Michael’s relationship with the people in the communities and villages we visited. He was good at making the photo subjects excited to see him and it made for pictures with many genuine smiles. We visited places that most visitors would never know about.
